Jaxson Carhart, 18 years old, from Saint John, New Brunswick, has found a meaningful employment experience at Port Saint John with the support of Inclusion NB’s Transition to Work Program and Transition Facilitator, Robyn MacFawn. Jaxson is a Grade 12 student at Simmonds High School and will be graduating in June of 2026.
Robyn noted the following:
Over the last few years, when Jaxson and Robyn have talked about summer employment, he has consistently shared that he enjoys working with his hands, being outside, and being part of a team. They explored different workplaces around the city where he could see himself thriving, and when they discussed Port Saint John, it felt like a strong match for the hands-on work and teamwork he was looking for. That’s when they decided to apply.
Since joining the team at Port Saint John, Jaxson has found more than just a summer job—he’s discovered a sense of belonging and pride in his work. Whenever Robyn speaks with Matt or Jason (employees at Port Saint John) about Jaxson’s experience, they’ve always highlighted his positive attitude and eagerness to learn. As he’s grown more comfortable in his role, Jaxson has started asking more questions, connecting with his coworkers, and showing up each day ready to work hard and contribute.
On Thursday, December 4th, at Inclusion NB’s annual Saint John Luncheon, Jaxson and his mother, Melissa, shared their story.
Melissa:
Good morning,
First, I would like to start off by thanking Inclusion NB for the invitation to speak in front of you today and share Jaxson’s amazing story of success with the Transition to Work program.
Jaxson was diagnosed with non-speaking Autism at the very young age of 3 years old. As he got older, we worked very hard at home and with support services for Jaxson to learn basic communication skills. At 4 years old, he was being taught sign language to be able to communicate basic needs and wants. Slowly, words and sentence formation came together enough for Jaxson to have verbal delayed communication rather than relying on the sign language to communicate.
During these early years of development as a parent we often wondered. What will Jaxson’s future look like? Will Jaxson be able to get a job? How will we approach an employer and ask for them to take a chance on Jaxson knowing there will be additional requirements needed to support him in the workforce? Will the world be kind and accepting of his additional needs that he requires to be successful? These were just a few questions that weighed heavy on us as parents.
Three years ago, Jaxson’s name was submitted by Simonds High School to Inclusion NB to part take in the Transition to Work program. At the time, my husband Judson and I had no idea exactly what this would mean for Jaxson and his future in the workforce. Since grade 10, Jaxson has met with Robyn from Inclusion every few weeks and, during their time together, Robyn has supported Jaxson in his dreams to get a job in a field of his interest. All while teaching him skills in preparation for job interviews and on work ethic.
Fast forward to today, Jaxson is now integrated into the workforce and is thriving working here at Port Saint John. Jaxson has been able to show not only us as his parents but his mentors and employers that he is more than capable of amazing and great things when given the correct knowledge, support, direction and guidance.
This experience has not only provided Jaxson with on-the-job skills training, but has also opened other areas of development in different fundamental areas of his life. Jaxson’s growth in communication skills, personal relationships, responsibilities, money management and work ethic has been absolutely amazing to witness.
The Transition to Work program has proven to be a blessing for Jaxson and we are beyond honored to have been given this gift of support in getting Jaxson set on his journey in the workforce. This opportunity has been a dream come true not only for Jaxson but for our family and we are very grateful.
We want to thank Robyn for believing in our son Jaxson and supporting him during his strengths and even in his weaknesses, for her patience and time in opening all these doors and helping pave the way to Jaxson to live his best life as a working adult.
A big thank you also goes out to Port Saint John for opening up their workspace and being so accommodating and welcoming to Jaxson. To Jason and Matt, who work alongside Jaxson daily, who have taken him under their wing and have treated him not only as a co-worker but one of the guys and friend. You both have been amazing mentors and have become like family. We appreciate everything you have done and are doing for Jaxson. It is very clear to us how much he looks up to both of you guys.
They say it takes a village to raise a child and my family wants to thank you all for being a part of our village. Jaxson shines brighter because of all of you and your inclusiveness.
Jaxson speaks:
Hi,
My name is Jaxson Carhart and I have autism. I work here at Port Saint John through the Transition to Work program with Inclusion. I am really excited to work at the Port because I can have my own job and make money to buy things.
I have learned many new things since I started working here. Matt and Jason have helped me learn new skills that I can do by myself or with their help. I set up and tear down events, take care and maintain the grounds around the port.
I love working here because everyone is kind and respectful of me and they help me when I need it. I love meeting new people and touring the cruise ships. They are really cool. I really love my job at Port Saint John and I hope I can continue working here in the future.
I am very lucky Robyn helped me get my job here. Thank you, Robyn,
Matt and Jason, thank you for being my co-workers. You guys treat me with kindness and help me feel very proud of myself.
Thank you, Port Saint John, for letting me work here and be a part of the team!
Thank you everyone.
