For Olivia Calder, graduating from high school is more than the end of one chapter. It is the beginning of an exciting new one.
After graduating from Harbour View High School in Saint John this past June, Olivia is stepping into the workforce with growing confidence, new skills, and a job at Westfield Coffee House & Eatery in Grand Bay.
Olivia first joined the Westfield Coffee House & Eatery team last summer through a Neil Squire program. What began as a summer employment opportunity quickly became something more.
The team enjoyed having Olivia as part of their workplace, and they were impressed by her contributions. Because of her strong work ethic and positive attitude, the owners, Christine Johnstone and Murray Arthurs, continued to employ her every Saturday morning throughout her Grade 12 year.
As Olivia prepared for life after high school, she began thinking about what she wanted her future to look like. With support, she worked on updating her resume, preparing for and completing an interview, and identifying her employment goals.
Perhaps most importantly, Olivia began building the confidence to advocate for herself.
When the time came to talk about her plans after graduation, Olivia took an important step: she asked Christine and Murray if she could take on additional hours.
They were happy to say yes.
Recognizing Olivia’s skills and the value she brings to their team, Christine and Murray decided to increase her schedule. For Olivia, this is an exciting opportunity to continue developing her skills, gaining independence, and building a future in her community.
For Christine and Murray, Olivia’s success is an example of the impact an inclusive employer can have when they recognize and support the strengths, skills, and potential of every employee.
When asked about Olivia, the owners shared that they wish more employers would take a chance on hiring people who may need some additional support.
Their experience with Olivia has shown them firsthand that creating an inclusive workplace benefits everyone.
“Christine, Murray, and their team have created a workplace where Olivia has been given the opportunity to learn, contribute, and grow,” says Robyn MacFawn, Transition Facilitator at Inclusion NB. “Their willingness to recognize Olivia’s strengths has helped her build confidence, not only as an employee, but as a young adult preparing for life after high school.”
