At Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Miramichi, New Brunswick, inclusivity isn’t just a goal—it’s a practice. Thanks to the efforts of Inclusion NB, two individuals, Dana and Ricky, have found work experience with the ReStore team. Their journey is a testament to the power of inclusive hiring and the positive impact it has on employees, coworkers, and the community.
A Pathway to Employment
Dana’s employment journey began with Inclusion NB’s Transition to Work program which she was able to take in school, while attending North and South Esk Regional High School. After graduation, she transitioned into the Employment Assistance Services program, where she was referred to Shane Tucci, Manager at Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Shane saw the opportunity for Dana to gain hands-on experience as a Merchandiser in a retail setting.
Ricky’s path was slightly different. His Case Manager at Social Development referred him to Chelsey Peckham, an Employment Counsellor at Inclusion NB. Chelsey then connected Ricky with Shane, and now Ricky is working as a Back Shop Processor at ReStore.
From the start, Shane was eager to welcome Dana and Ricky, recognizing their potential. “As soon as I met them, I knew they were going to be an instant fit,” he recalls.
Creating an Inclusive Workplace
With the support from a Job Coach, Peter Greely, contracted through Inclusion NB, Dana and Ricky quickly adapted to their roles. Peter played a crucial part in helping them integrate into the workplace, and over time, Dana and Ricky became increasingly independent.
A Job Coach is a professional who provides individualized support to help people with disabilities maintain employment. This could include providing hands-on training and support at the workplace, advocating for accommodations or modifications where necessary, helping the individual develop the required skills and acting as a liaison between the employee and employer. Job Coaches are a fully funded role with no cost to the employer.
“Their job coach is now merely in the background,” Shane notes, emphasizing their growth and self-sufficiency.
For Chelsey, this partnership has been particularly meaningful.
“I really appreciate how open Shane has been to partner together to create opportunities for individuals in our community with an intellectual or developmental disability,” she shares. “Shane sees the value and benefits of hiring inclusively and has been a tremendous support to our program and its participants.”
Positive Impact on the Team and Community
Since starting in October 2024, Dana and Ricky have made a lasting impact on their coworkers and customers. Shane has seen firsthand how they contribute to the work environment.
“Dana brightens the room, and Ricky is a funny guy,” he says. “They are both so positive and never bring negativity into the workplace.”
Beyond the workplace, Dana and Ricky have gained recognition from the community. Customers frequently visit the store just to check in on them, and their helpful nature has not gone unnoticed. Shane recalls a moment when Ricky stepped in to help a customer struggling to lift an item—an instinctive act of kindness that embodies the values of the ReStore team.
A Model for Inclusive Hiring
Shane encourages other employers to consider inclusive hiring, emphasizing how simple and rewarding it can be.
“Why not?” he asks. “Really, the only thing I would suggest is to meet the individuals that someone like Chelsey, who is skilled in identifying a person who may be a good fit for the business, recommends. What is five minutes? I made an instant connection with Ricky when we met and knew his personality would be a great fit. The same goes for Dana.”
Dana and Ricky’s success of developing job skills at Habitat for Humanity ReStore showcases the immense benefits of inclusive employment. Their dedication, positivity, and willingness to learn have enriched the workplace culture, proving that when given the opportunity, everyone can thrive. Their story serves as an inspiration for businesses looking to build a more diverse and inclusive workforce—one where every individual has the chance to shine.
