On May 8th, 2026, at our Moncton Fundraising Breakfast: Wake Up with Inclusion, we were proud to recognize a local business that is truly walking the walk when it comes to building inclusive workplaces and communities. Sobeys on Mountain Road was presented with an Inclusion Champion Award, a reflection of their ongoing commitment to creating meaningful employment opportunities and fostering a culture where everyone belongs.

Through their leadership, the team at Sobeys Mountain Road has demonstrated what’s possible when inclusion is embedded into everyday practice. From supporting employees to cultivating an environment grounded in respect, dignity, and growth, their efforts are making a tangible difference, not only within their store but across the broader Moncton community.

Sobeys Mountain Road continues to set a strong example of how businesses can lead with purpose and create spaces where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and succeed.

Q&A with Sobeys Store Manager: Tracy DeWolfe

When did you first consider becoming an inclusive employer?

Sobeys has been an inclusive employer for many years and includes being diverse, equitable and inclusive in their key values. I am proud to say I work for this company.

What are the benefits of having Calvin and others as part of your team?

There are many benefits to having Calvin and others as part of our team. From assisting on the floor with our customers to helping with workloads to ensuring our product displays are customer-ready, they play such an important role and also increase our amount of employee interactions.

How has this enhanced your workplace culture?

This has enhanced our team’s collaboration, engagement, knowledge, respect, awareness, open-mindedness, and experience of working with individuals at different levels in the workplace. We have also revised our Engagement & Social Committee within our store to better reflect our diverse team and customer base.

What’s been the feedback from your team? Your Customers?

My team is always very excited and engaged when they learn about a new student coming in to work with us. Everyone treats Calvin and others as part of the team, and they make a difference when they are here helping us out. We also hired Kennedy after she completed her work experience with us, and she is amazing. She knows what is expected and gets it done without hesitation; we couldn’t ask for any better. She is a key member of our team, and our customers are extremely happy with the service she provides.

What would you say to other employers who are considering inclusive hiring?

Being inclusive and having an open mind to working with individuals you may never have considered in the past can bring forward many rewards.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Prior to becoming involved with our local schools and Inclusion NB, we hired two individuals, one who is hard of hearing and an employee who has Autism. Both individuals are driven, competent, reliable, and hard-working and have made a positive impact on our team.
