For Marcus, employment is about more than having a job – it's about building a future.
Living independently and taking the bus to work each day, Marcus has established a routine that reflects his growing confidence and independence. He works 20 hours each week with the City of Fredericton through the City's EQUIP (Empowering Qualified Underrepresented Individuals in Professions) program, an initiative designed to create meaningful employment opportunities for underrepresented individuals. Inclusion NB has been supporting Marcus throughout his employment journey and career development. (Inclusion NB)
When Marcus' first contract came to an end in December 2025, the conversation wasn't about whether he would continue working; it was about what came next.
Working with Inclusion NB, Marcus explored opportunities to advance his career within municipal government. Together, they identified a role that better aligned with his interests, strengths, and long-term career goals.
In January, Marcus began a new contract with the City's Information Technology department.
The position has proven to be a perfect fit.
"Marcus is incredibly detail-oriented," says Emma Ortega, Facilitator with Inclusion NB. "This role allows him to use those strengths every day while contributing to meaningful work."
Marcus spends his days overlaying historical maps that document the development and growth of Fredericton over time. The work requires patience and precision, qualities that come naturally to him.
"Marcus continues to impress us with his dedication, attention to detail, and willingness to learn. He's contributing to important projects that help improve public safety services and organize critical information. It's been rewarding to see his confidence and skills grow along the way." – Jason with the City of Fredericton
Beyond developing new technical skills, Marcus continues to build his confidence as a professional. Through ongoing career development, Inclusion NB has supported him in exploring pathways for advancement and understanding how he can continue to grow his career within local government.
By matching Marcus' strengths with meaningful work, the City of Fredericton has gained a dedicated employee, while Marcus has gained more than employment. His job has provided financial stability, increased independence, and the confidence to build the life he wants.
